Setting up your wireless router to use WPA encryption is easy and can be done rather quickly. Open your web browser and point it to your router’s web address. If you don’t know the web address, see if this tutorial helps you: Three Steps to Find Out Your Router’s IP Address
Most likely you will be asked for a login and password. If you have never set up your login try to leave username blank and enter “admin” as the password. Again, this is a standard value that only works if you have never changed it.
Once inside the configuration interface, look for a menu that says “Wireless” or “Wireless Security”. The wording her may vary from router to router. (Check the screenshot above for an example on how the menu looks like for Linksys routers)
Within the security settings, make sure to set the encryption method to WPA, WPA Personal or WPA2. The algorithm should be set to AES which is more secure than TKIP.
Finally, make sure to select a secure password that cannot be guessed easily. Check our post How to Choose Secure Passwords? for tips and tricks on that topic.
