When sending emails in Outlook or other email clients, you rely on protocols called POP, IMAP or SMTP. These protocols were developed to transmit your email communication over the Internet and deliver them right into your inbox.
The problem with these protocols is that – per default – they don’t send your emails over en encrypted connection, which means that your communication can be intercepted and read very easily. Hackers may even get a hold of your passwords and login credentials.
Luckily, you can change your server settings and enable an encrypted connection in a few very basic steps:
To get started, click on Tools and open the option for “Account Settings”:
Now, select the account you wish to change by double clicking it. You will see the following window:
Click on “More Settings” to enter the advanced setting menu which allows you to change the server settings. Now, select the tap labeled “Advanced” to get the following window:
Finally, simply check the box highlighted in the image above and change the connection type to SSL. Confirm your selection by clicking the OK button.
That’s it, you’re done. From now on, Outlook will send and receive your emails over an encrypted connection.
