Corsair Padlock, a USB flash drive offering protection for your data by means of a number combination, bears serious security risks and proves to be an unreliable device to ensure your data stays encrypted.
The idea is certainly great: a regular USB stick equipped with a built-in keypad only granting you access to its data if you know the right combination. If you don’t, then the stick will simply not show up as a drive on your computer and there is no way you can access the data.
There is, too claims a Dutch security site (TweakBlogs) and proves its point. Instead of entering the right access code, they have found the right electrical contact to be made inside the device for it it unlock and pop up on your computer.
Unfortunately, this is so simple that everybody capable of soldering in a small resistor (see image) can easily unlock a Corsair Padlock permanently.
As you can see, there is really not much to it. Nevertheless, using a device like the Padlock is still better than not protecting your data at all.
To be on the absolute safe side, however, there is no way that leads past the use of actual encryption technology. You can currently get high security devices for as little as $66.67 for 2 GB of encrypted storage. Read more in our post Kingston DataTraveler – Encrypted USB Flash Drive for Mac OS X
