AutoSave Encrypt – the latest solution by UK-based security company “Store and Protect” – allows users to automatically create encrypted CDs without the need of additional software.
The idea is simple but genius: Instead of providing you with software that has to be installed and configured on multiple PCs, AutoSave Encrypt gives you ready-to-use blank CD-Rs, pre-installed with a fully functional encryption application. That way, the software goes with you wherever you need to access your secure files.
The tool is easy-to-use and comes with a well organised interface! Insert one of the blank CDs into your computer and you are automatically asked to set up your encryption password. Then, an explorer-like window is displayed allowing you to drag-and-drop files and folders that are to be burned onto the CD. Once you are finished selecting the files you want to burn, the software starts the encryption and burning process, which does not take much longer then it does with usual CDs.
AutoSave CDs can store up to 690MB and allow for multiple sessions, meaning that you can add new data to it at a later point of time until it is full.
The completed and encrypted CD can be used with any Windows-based PC without the need for additional software. Simply insert the CD and again you are asked for your password. Only the correct entry will let you read the content which is displayed in another explorer-like window.
A nice additional feature is the included wipe off tool (data destruction) which can permanently delete the files you burned on CD from your hard drive, making it impossible to restore them.
All in all, AutoSave Encrypt is a great tool and an easy-to-use way to protect your sensitive data. With approximately $36 (£24) for four CDs, however, it remains in the space of upper price security that is great for companies and occasional high security files but nothing you would use on a day-to-day basis.
